NEA Directors’ Capitol Hill Visits: NEA Directors and IEA Officers participating: Jim Grimes, Eric Brown, Joyce Bailey, Tom Tully, Alex Wallace, Vickie Mahrt, and IEA Sec.-Treas. Al Llorens.

The issues and legislation discussed included in the House of Representatives: Restore the Option of Grade-Span Testing – pre-No Child Left Behind practices (HR 4172), Charter School Accountability and Transparency – Charters should be subject to the same reporting requirements as regular public schools (HR 10), and Comprehensive Immigration Reform (HR 15).

The issues and legislation discussed with Senators focused on Support for Meaningful Teacher Preparation – using programs such as edTPA and other Educator Developed programs, and Support for the Strong Start for America’s Children Act – support pre-K and other programs (S 1697).

Offices visited included: Representatives Rodney Davis (R-13), Brad Schneider (D-10), Cheri Bustos (D-17), Tammy Duckworth (D-8), Danny Davis (D-7), Daniel Lipinski (D-3), William Enyart (D-12), Pewter Roskam (R-6), John Shimkus (R-19), Mike Quigley (D-5), Aaaron Schock (R-18), and Robin Kelly (D-2).

Materials also shared with offices for Senators Durbin and Kirk, and Representatives Guiterrez, Kinzinger, Rush, Schakowski, Hultgren and Foster.
